The traditional artwork of the native people of the American Southwest has long since been of interest in to art patrons. The Native American Art Exhibit at the Coconino Center for the Arts will exhibit both traditional work as well as contemporary fine art. Many Navajo, Hopi and other four corners region artists continue to convey ideas similar to those in the work of their ancestors, often drawing inspiration from the southwest landscape or current topics, while using contemporary media to do so. Such, this exhibit will feature a paintings and photographs in addition to traditional media associated with Native American arts.
Some of the featured artists include nationally acclaimed artists such as painters Shonto Begay (top and bottom images) and Baje Whitethorne, Sr. (dancer, above) and silversmith, Robert Lomadafkie (jewelry, at left). The Native American Art Exhibit provides viewers a modern link to current concepts being explored in Native American art with equal emphasis on aesthetics.
