Greetings!
Welcome
to the second edition of the Flagstaff ArtScene, your e-Newsletter for
the Coconino Center for the Arts and Flagstaff Cultural Partners.
The Center is bustling with activity. Art exhibitions,
concerts, receptions and celebrations are all on the plate in the next
two months. I truly hope you'll be able to join us for some of
these fantastic offerings. We're also pleased to
announce our collaboration with the Grand Canyon Guitar Society.
These good folks are bringing some rare talent to Flagstaff.
Their series of classical guitar concerts are a match made in heaven
with the CCA amphitheater. High quality, stunning performers in a
close intimate setting - the result is sure to be magic.
There's
much more, but I'll let you read about it yourself. Be sure to
check the CCA Calendar on the left, and the Community Event Calendar
below it. Enjoy the offerings, and please share with your friends
and family.
We'll see you at the Center... Cheers, John Tannous Executive Director

Appetizers Provides Visual Feast

Artists Coalition Serves It Up
Flagstaff's
thriving arts community is ready to open its doors. Each year,
artists from all over the Flagstaff area participate in Flagstaff Open
Studios by inviting the public to watch them create in their own studio
spaces.
As a intriguing first taste to the feast for the eyes that is Open Studios, the Artists Coalition of Flagstaff presents Appetizers.
The exhibition features one work of art by each participating Open
Studios artist. The ACF expects over 100 artists to be showcasing
this year! Each work of art is that artist's invitation to the
community to visit his/her studio during the Open Studios event.
Appetizers opens
with a reception, which will serve up - yep, you guessed it - real
appetizers and beverages for your belly. The reception is set for
Saturday, August 18, from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Coconino Center for the Arts.
Featured artists will give tours of the exhibition each Saturday at 2pm
during the exhibition. Open Studios happens the weekend of
September 15-16.
For more information about Open Studios, visit the Artists Coalition of Flagstaff website. To see the exhibition schedule for Appetizers, visit the CCA calendar of events online.

Hosts Workshop at CCA
Each
year, the Arizona Commission on the Arts (ACA) presents ongoing
workshops across the state to discuss programs for individual artists,
organizations, and schools, and to hear about projects in communities.
This summer, the ACA hosts its annual Listening Tour. The
Commission staff will facilitate discussion about the meaningful and
creative work taking place in Flagstaff, and hear about concerns and
issues facing artists, administrators, and arts educators in your
community. Commission Staff will also provide information to help
individual artists become better acquainted with the programs available
to them, and will answer questions to help artists prepare for the
annual Artist Projects Grant deadline in September.
During the program, the Commission also will be offering for individual artists a mini-workshop entitled, Individual Artists: A Conversation About Supporting Your Work, led by Visual Arts Director Gregory Sale and Arizona artists from diverse disciplines.
The workshop will be held at the Coconino Center for the Arts on Friday, August 24, at 5:30 P.M.
For more information, download the flyer for this program (MS Word document).

Series Kicks Off Sept 29
Have you ever seen a live concert at the Coconino Center for the Arts? Shows here tend to have a special quality, owing to the intimacy between artist and audience.
You can experience it for yourself - perhaps again - this fall. Flagstaff Cultural Partners is partnering with the Grand Canyon Guitar Society to present a series of six classical guitar concerts that were made for the Center's intimate setting.
Artists featured in the Series have received critical acclaim on an international level. Chinese classical guitarist, Xuefei Yang (pictured), was recently praised by the New York Times for her "feisty virtuosity,
impeccable technique and sensitive musicianship." Other artists
include local favorite, Tom Sheeley; winner of the International
Competition of the Guitar Foundation of America, Thomas Viloteau; and
the dazzling Duo Caputo Pompilio.
The Series kicks off September 29, with a concert by talented guitarist, Craig Yarbrough. Season passes are on sale NOW! See the full schedule, learn about the artists, and purchase tickets online.
